Surprisingly Amazing TAGUM CITY

For a peculiar tourist like me, the Overland Transport Terminal, most popular as Ecoland Bus Terminal in Davao City is a haven for an unplanned tour to anywhere around Mindanao. Tourists will be delighted with the tight security and updated list of destinations plus travel time table posted on the board upon entering the terminal. Among the list of destinations, I opted to take the bus going to Tagum City and see what I can find. Tagum City is the capital of Davao Del Norte.

It took me just an hour to get there via Rural Bus and I was very surprised to discover how beautiful the city is. And one will never get lost.

Signage here and there, monuments and landmarks, and the awesome kilometers-long lineup of palm trees along the national highway greet everyone as you approach the city proper. I haven't seen anything like this in the entire country. I was not able to take pictures along the highway but I promise to take some next time.

Tagum is a peaceful city in a provincial setting with almost everything - hotels, malls, cozy restaurants, organized transport, wide cemented roads. There are a number of attractions in Tagum waiting for me to conquer in my second visit.

A Taste of Freshness, A Taste of BUKIDNON

Talk about Bukidnon and there's only one thing that would come into our minds - Del Monte pineapples! Indeed it is the major attraction of the province and no one would come to Bukidnon without visiting Del Monte Plantation for a taste of the freshest, the sweetest and the most delicious pineapple in the Philippines.

The plantation is located in Camp Phillips, a community in the town of Manolo Fortich. It is an hour drive to from Cagayan De Oro City by taking either a bus to Manolo Fortich or a van that goes directly to Camp Phillips. But take a short stopover and don't miss to take a souvenir photo at the Bukidnon Welcome sign in Barangay Alae rotunda.

Greeting you as you reach Camp Phillips is a big pineapple statue, and is labeled "Ready To Eat" - another perfect spot for picture taking. From there you can look around the vast area without seeking any permission from Del Monte as it is open to the public. There are American style housing project built by the previous American owners of Del Monte for the employees. Flowering plants are grown by the present owners and beautiful blooms abound the community.

Going farther, you will see the vast field of pineapples covering around 9000 hectares of land. There are also areas planted with bananas, tomatoes, bell pepper among other produce that I am sure where they get the ingredients for all Del Monte products we can find in the supermarkets.

IFUGAO And MOUNTAIN PROVINCE - The Heart Of The Cordilleras

The Shrine City of DAPITAN

Located in Zamboanga Del Norte, Dapitan City gained its fame as the place of exile of Gat. Jose Rizal. Our National Hero arrived here in 1892 and left shortly before his death in 1898. For four years, he made his exile days significant to the people of Dapitan by practicing medicine and pursuing scientific studies, composing artistic and literary works, establishing community development projects, etc.

Have your own feel of Rizal's life by visiting the Rizal Shrine museum containing memorabilia such as old photos, books and medical equipments, the park where replicas of the exile houses were rebuilt, the Relief Map of Mindanao and the Dapitan Town Plaza which were previously declared as National Cultural Treasure and National Historical Landmark respectively.

Other historical sites and structures worth visiting are the Rizal's Disembarkation Site, Town Hall Building (City Hall), Old Rizal Memorial District Hospital, Ilihan Hill, Parochial School, Casa Real, Gabaldon Building, St. James Church, the Sta. Cruz marker, Gabaldon school building, and old ancestral houses.

Enchanting Daranak and Batlag Falls - Tanay, Rizal

For an exciting and unforgettable nature tripping, I recommend Tanay, Rizal which is just a stone's throw away from Manila.

The main attraction of Tanay is the enchanting Daranak Falls located at the foot of Tanay mountain. The area is refreshing, with natural vegetation, ponds and streams cascading through rocks, complemented with a recreation area of nipa huts and a cafe-restaurant overlooking the falls.

Just a short walk uphill from Daranak Falls is another waterfalls which is called the Batlag Falls. To get there, a signage will lead you to the concrete stair leading further up. At the end of the stairs, you will fnd a desolate-looking park and cottages but that's ok - this is the real definition of untouched nature. Overgrown bushes, catch basins, cascading waters, clear pools and streams, beautifully gnarled trees and interesting plants greet you as you reach the falls. The feeling was like getting lost, then finding a paradise. It is such an awesome sight.

Lakbay Loyd Recall - MASBATE In Pictures

It was May 2009, out on my usual Legaspi City trip, I decided to gather some information from the net on how to get to Masbate for another off-the-beaten-path adventure. Simple. I took a van to Port of Pilar in Sorsogon Province. From there I jumped on a ferry which will take me to Masbate.

Masbate Island is a cattle county. It is well known for its week long rodeo competition held each year in the last week in June. Beside cattle, Masbate is also known for its beautiful beaches lined with coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. There are some great waterfalls to visit and the province also has some of the best spring water around.

I only spent a day and a night in the province so I wasn't able to see these great attractions. But I was able to learn some history and add a stamp on my travel map.

CORREGIDOR ISLAND - Philippine History By The Ruins

The story behind the Battle Of Corregidor Island has been written in all history books and has been told from generation to generation. But witnessing the history as it unfolds, though in ruins, is truly an amazing experience, and cheap.

A guided tour of the island costs P1,999.00 via Sun Cruises. There is a 7:00 am and 11:00 am ferry schedule from the port in Harbor Square (CCP Complex) that will take tourists to the island and back. Buses with multi-lingual guides (yes there are Japanese and Korean guides, aside from the English-speaking ones) will be waiting to take everyone to the hotel for a buffet lunch and to all the historical locations for a complete four-hour tour before heading back to Manila.

CAGBALETE ISLAND - Beaching On A Rainy Season

I am not, and will never be a beach person. Ask me to go to the beach any summer and I will certainly think a thousand times first before I say yes. But without any hesitation I miraculously agreed to go with a friend when he invited me to visit one of the less frequented vacation spot in the country - the Cagbelete Island - on a rainy season.

Being off the beaten track, we had to exert quite an amount of effort before we finally reached the island. To get there, it's a four-hour ride to Lucena from Manila plus another hour non-aircon bus ride to Mauban, Quezon. Next, an hour or less boat ride from Mauban Port to reach Sabang Port in Cagbalete plus a 20-minute trail hike to the remote and naturally beautiful Villa Cleofas Resort.

Beaching in Cagbalete on a rainy season was truly a unique experience - exactly my definition of a perfect getaway from the hassles of busy city life. The island was like our own piece of paradise, gifted with fine, powder-white sand, peaceful and quiet except for the relaxing sound of the waves - definitely a perfect place for nature lovers like me.

Nueva Viscaya's Heritage Sites

The country's gateway to Cagayan Valley region is Nueva Viscaya. The province may not be any traveller's choice for adventure and site-seeing but one would be surprised to realize that it is worth exploring the province - with it's breathtaking view of the Cordillera and Sierra Madre, plus a number of heritage sites to learn and discover.

Solano - the province's commercial center. Known to travellers as stopover for those who want to break up their journey to Isabela, Cagayan or the Mountain Province, the town indeed is one convenient stop. It has the nicest accomodation facility in the province, natural park resorts, popular fastfood restaurants, supermarkets, and the unique Ayuyang bar with its ethnic theme with nightly live acoustic Ilocano music.

Bayombong - the province's seat of government. One of the quietests and cleanest provincial capital I've ever visited. The capitol site has a large landscaped park with man-made lagoons, surrounded with pine trees and overlooking the picturesque Sierra Madre mountains. The town also houses the Cathedral of St. Dominic De Guzman, which is one the province's heritage sites.

Dupax Del Sur - this quiet town north of Nueva Viscaya was declared by the National Center for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as one of the country's National Cultural Treasure. The Cathedral of St. Vincent Ferrer, built by Dominican friars in 1776 features a baptistery and narthex pillars covered with finely carved stucco, is the town's main attraction. The oldest acacia tree in the Philippines can also be found here.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – All About Tuna…Plus More

I’m not always a lonely traveler after all. Being envied for having a bizarre travel perception by friends who also crave for adventure, I am always willing to take along a friend or two with me and bump into a different kind of experience I always have as an odd traveler.

That November in 2005, an all-time friend and colleague Joey Comandao (now an entrepreneur who owns JTC Shirts and Prints and a successful wedding planner [JC Events]) once begged to come along when he found out I am going out on a vacation which I approved. But for one condition – he should take the risk of going to South Cotabato with me. Funny - that he was alarmed at first since a series of bombing rocked the city of Gensan in the last couple of years. Well, it has always been the notion of people living in Luzon that Mindanao is the home of MILF Bombers (sounds like a basketball team) he he.

We stayed in Davao for a day then went to Gensan by bus the next morning. Without any concrete plans in mind, I just followed my instinct and my “bahala na” move. Along the way, while I was busy taking videos of the scenic Sarangani Bay and the cliffs and mountains, Joey was also busy talking to his seatmate Joy who was also meeting a friend in Gensan and take her on a tour. I made prior arrangement to meet Ruby, a friend I met in Davao some few yeas back.

Three hours and a half later we finally reached Gensan and the three of us headed to Royale Hotel. Joy’s friend [I forgot her name, I'll just call her Cherry] was already there patiently waiting for her, and Ruby was nowhere to be found. Ruby showed up after ten minutes and surprisingly, our meeting turned out to be a reunion of friends. Yes, these girls have known each other back in the early days and now reunited because of me and Joey. What a coincidence!

Since Joy, Joey and I have a common agenda, we agreed to take the tour altogether. Cherry offered her car, and asked assistance from her friend Avel Manansala (now a Gensan’s PR guru whose always very visible on TV covering the Pambansang Kamao's triumph in the recent bout, the Bb. Pilipinas 2011 Beauty Queen’s homecoming, etc. etc.) for hotel info and other Gensan notes. Surprisingly (again!), Avel is Ruby’s wedding Ninong. Ha ha.

Day 1. A visit to KCC Mall of Gensan should be a priority on the list. There I met Francis Sablon – a Travel and Tour guru in Gensan and Davao – who remains to be a very good friend up to now. Our friends took us to the city market (where the recent bombing took place) later that day for some souvenir shopping. The visit to the main port to see the freshest tuna in the whole country was an amazement. That is why Gensan is called the Tuna Capital of the Philippines anyway.

Day 2. Off to Polomolok, a municipality of South Cotabato where the Dole Plantation is located. With the help of Cherry’s connections, we were able to traverse through the entire plantation not securing a permit. What made this trip incredible? Inside the plantation, a pitcher of fresh pineapple juice cost only P10. And of course, the nice view of Mount Matutum, one of Mindanao’s highest peak. We still managed to continue our road trip up to Koronadal City then back to GenSan.

Day 3. Our morning started with a big breakfast from Jo’s Inato. For P50 a meal, you’ll have a big roasted chicken leg and an unlimited order of rice. Add another P40 pesos and you’ll find yourself bathing in a large bowl of soup enough to feed the whole barangay, ha ha ha. Ruby was very nice to come along for a quick Gensan city tour. By lunchtime we hit the bus back to Davao City and said adieu to our newfound friends for that wonderful two-day experience in Gensan.

After this journey, Joey went back to Manila with an altered perception about Mindanao and thanked me for letting him experience one of the most memorable adventures of his life.

Tuguegarao - The Jewel of Cagayan Valley

Tuguegarao City is the capital of Cagayan Province, and is the center for business and learning in the entire Region 2, also popularly known as Cagayan Valley. It is also the gateway to major town and cities in the region and major tourism destinations such as the Callao Caves in Peñablanca town and the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat in the municipality of Piat (see older posts).

A Cebu Pacific promo-fare flight I booked for around Php200.00 one-way from Manila took me 45 minutes to get there. By bus, it would take a long 12-hour drive..

Accomodation in Tuguegarao City is never a problem. Although there's not much choice for deluxe hotels, I was happy to book a room in Hotel Candice because it is cheap. If you want a nice budget hotel for as low as Php600 (single) and Php800 (twin) in the middle of the city then this could be your choice.

While in the city, one should never miss visiting St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, the seat of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao and the biggest Spanish built church in the province. Also, what caught my attention was the city’s calesa. It’s design is unique and far different from the usual design we see in Intramuros or Binondo.

Cagayan : Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat

One of the frequently visited site in the province of Cagayan is the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat. This has become a major pilgrimage site of Cagayan Valley where different people from all walks of life pray to be healed or simply to offer gratitude to the Lord. It was a Sunday when we visited the church and it was full packed - though the mass was held every hour.

Outside the church is a street cum flea market where you can find rows of stalls and vendors selling religious images and Cagayan's famous native kakanin called pawa, a local delicacy made from ground sticky rice with sweetened ground peanut filling inside. A pack of this yummy treat costs P25 and make sure you buy it warm to ensure the same heavenly experience I had munching on them.

Piat is 41 kilometers away from Tuguegarao City. To get there, a number of regular vans going to Piat is available at the downtown terminal and costs P60 to get to Piat town proper. Take the same ride to go back to Tuguegarao City.

Cagayan's CALLAO CAVE

Callao Cave is one of Cagayan province's best known tourist attractions. It has 7 chambers and 3-4 crevices which allow natural light into the caves. Located in a remote place in Penablanca town (30 minutes+ from Tuguegarao City), it has been featured and included on the DOT websites and ads. I knew the place was beautiful based from internet photos and from ads, but being there was more than an awesome experience.

To get there, we hired a tricycle en-route to Penablanca from Tuguegarao for P400.00 round-trip. Before reaching the cave, one can try the Pinacanauan river ride and pay a little extra. But we opted not to take the ride because the weather is not permitting, instead we took the road going directly near the entrance of the cave. Callao Cave is very easy to explore but requires little test of endurance as you go up the stair with close to 200 steps before witnessing the massive limestone and rock formations inside.

I observed that Callao Cave is not that popular to tourists (both local and foreign) as compared to the other northern Philippines destinations. Maybe it's because of the remote location. And there's not much to see in Cagayan than in Ilocos or the Mountain Province.

Flowers In Brick - The Tumauini Church in Isabela

Having seen Saint Mathias Church in Tumauini, Isabela in one of DOT’s advertisements (with the Songbird as model) and having read about the its unique history and design encouraged me to visit this marvelous architectural structure.

HOW TO GET THERE : Take a bus to Tuguegarao which will pass by the town of Tumauini. Tell the bus driver or collector to drop you at the central town of Tumauini. The church is just a short walk from the highway.

Let me share below article about Tumauini to all Lakbay Loyd followers. This was written by Roger Gaspar in one of his architectural blogs (I wish to thank him for this informative arcticle – though I don’t know him personally).

Flowers in Brick: The Tumauini Church in Isabela

Jewel of the Valley.” This is how Benito Legarda calls the Parish Church of Saint Mathias in his inquiry, Angels in Clay: The Typical Cagayan Church. Its exquisite brick ornamentation makes this church in Isabela one of the most striking and interesting churches built during the Spanish colonial period.

The church stands in a quiet little corner of the town, away from the mad rush hour of everyday life, at the end of a short, narrow, uneven asphalt track that diverts unobtrusively from the main road of Tumauini, a bustling little town where every mode of transportation- cars, jeepneys, buses, tricycles, bicycles, calesas- claim a stake to the same road. Tumauini is located in the northern part of Isabela, only an hour-and-a-half drive away from Tuguegarao in the Cagayan Valley.

Tumauini church was built by Fr. Domingo Forto from 1783 to 1788. With a keen eye to details and an affection to decoration, Fr. Forto created a work of art in his church. To achieve the ornamentation he wanted, he went as far as importing artisans from Pampanga to carve the wood moldings for the clay insets. Likewise, he devised an ingenious method that assured him that the laborers followed exactly his design, especially when he went away on missionary travels. A closer look at the spiral relief of the facade shows carved out numbers that indicate the proper sequence of the bricks. Some of the bricks were even stamped with a date; one brick displays the year “1784″.

Paired pseudo-Corinthian columns on the facade create a vertical rhythmic division, perhaps inspired by native foliage. Directly above an arched doorway in the central portion of the facade, a niche for a statuette precariously sits within the heavy laden horizontal cornice. Two larger niches, set in between paired columns, flank each side of the doorway. Another horizontal cornice traverses along the lower portion of the facade, demarcating a solid base for the entire composition.

The abundant ornamentation is seemingly overwhelming to the untrained eyes that it is easy to miss the fine details that give life to the facade. Perhaps, one must take moments of repose to scan the wealth of each red clay brick and discover trimmings of flowers, foliage, swags and angel faces. Some ornamentation are so subtle that discerning their meanings or allusions could bring a sense of fulfillment. For example, the columns that frame the side niches are faintly shaped just enough to suggest solomonic or twisted columns.

On the other hand, it is perplexing, almost impossible, to draw any meaning from some other ornamentation. For instance, one can only guess the significance of carriage wheel images at the base of the facade.

Possibly the most intriguing of all the ornaments are the odd-looking clay insets that bound the sides of the facade. These insets come to life as curvilinear forms that seem to crawl on the surface of the wall. Shaped like a reversed letter “S” or the number “3”, they could have originally signified some important message or idea that is now lost to an observer. The brick walls remain silent and they won’t tell the story.

The proliferation of ornaments on the facade is crowned by a pediment with stepped pinnacles on both sides. The stepped pinnacles are embellished with more clay insets varying from flowers to a coil. The pediment itself is also uncommon, being the only pediment in the colonial church lineage that has a very strong circular form. It is punctuated with a rose window that is decorated with a dazzling movement of swag-like ornaments.

Besides its brick inset ornamentation, the church is also exceptional among the colonial churches because of its unusual exposed brick construction. Unlike most timeworn churches, Tumauini church lacks a protective coating of plaster on its walls. One can assume that bricks in Tumauini were made durable enough to last natural elements as well as the passage of time.

To complete the composition, a belltower resolutely stands close to the facade. Built in 1803, the belltower is a rare gem, too. According to Winand Klassen, in his book Architecture in the Philippines, the Tumauini belltower is the only known cylindrical tower in the colonial period. The belltower’s cylindrical shape reinforces its kinship with the circular composition of the pediment. Like the facade, it is festively decorated with festoon garlands that wrap around each tier of the belltower. Here, the embellishment is magnified by the effective contrast of the reddish clay insets against the white plaster finish.

The happy gathering of brick ornaments extends into the church interior. Above the altar, a half canopy that is made of stone and carved with delicate ornaments becomes the central focus. The half canopy is unprecedented within the context of this brick church since stone, according to Legarda, was rarely used in this region.

The book, Great Churches of the Philippines, sums up the brick ornamentation of the church: “An ultra-Baroque church, it is unique for its extensive use of baked clay both for wall finishes and for ornamentation. In the construction of Western-style churches, clay is an off-beat idiom. It is structural slang!”

Surely, Tumauini church is an amalgam within the realms of Western traditional architecture. But the Parish Church of Saint Mathias is not in the west, or anywhere else. It is in the busy little town of Tumauini in Isabela. Here, the church contentedly awaits the next visitor to come and relish its wonderful architecture.

Puerto Princesa is really the gateway to the last frontier. It is an exciting place to be. Never to be missed is the city’s pride and joy – the Subterranean River National Park. The 8.2 km underground river winds through a spectacular cavern that flows directly into the sea. The entrance to the cave lies in an aquamarine lagoon surrounded by lush vegetation, monitor lizards, monkeys, and colorful birds.

For hassle-free trip to the Subterranean River, one must arrange a tour for P1,500 from any accredited tour operators in the city. They will provide you with transfers to your hotel, arrange the boat to take you to and from the entrance of the park, and lunch - all included in the package.

Day 2 - Discovering Tacloban City's Hidden Wealth

We have gone to the countryside on our first day so we opted to spend the next day walking around the city. Again, with our Waray friends' help, we were able to visit the following historical places.

Leyte Provincial Capitol

Constructed in 1907, it became the temporary seat of the Philippine Commonwealth government when Pres. Osmeña landed at Palo with the American troops. Within the halls of this massive building, important strategies and decisions were formed leading to the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation.

The Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum

The house (OR PALACE) was built by Imelda Marcos as a Romualdez ancestral house but as in most things historical in this country, it has since fallen into a sad state of decay. The museum charges P250 for five persons and P30 for every person in excess of five. There is additional charge for the use of camera and video camera. Considering the vast collection of treasures given to the Marcos family during their 20-year in power, what a waste to see the government neglecting this part of history merely on the basis of its being a part of the Marcos memory.

Some of the wood furniture, including bed posts, religious images and the 32-seater dining table had been eaten by termites. The museum survives on the entrance fees, which are barely enough for the salary of the museum staff and payment of electricity bill. As it is, the museum is poorly lighted and maintenance of the whole place is clearly wanting.

Despite this, we were held in awe at the opulence this place once was and marveled at the value of every piece of foreign gift given to Imelda by such people as Mao Zedong.

MacArthur Landing Memorial Park in Palo, Leyte

Leyte abounds by historical sites where battles once took place along beach fronts and hilltops. Among these places is the McArthur Landing Memorial Park with larger than life bronze statues of the landing of the Allied Forces. Inside the park is the Stone Garden of Peace where world leaders have inscribed pledges of peace.

Other natural points of interests include The Philippine-Japan Commemorative Monument and Park and the Maria Kannon Madonna of Peace Shrine. The scenic San Pedro Bay is also worth visiting.

48 Hours in Puerto Princesa, Palawan - Day 1

Palawan has steadily grown into a top Asian destination for beach lovers and eco-adventurists. With attractions Like El Nido, Honda Bay, and the Subterranean River National Park, it’s no wonder that this beautiful region is also known as the world’s last natural frontier.

I had a chance to visit Puerto Princesa, Palawan’s capital city one summer but only had two days to explore as many attractions as possible. Upon recommendation of some locals I met at RAQ’s pension, I was able to squeeze in almost every activity for 48 hours to enjoy my stay.

DAY 1 ACTIVITIES

Iwahig Penal Colony

Hired a trycicle and headed to Iwahig Penal Colony. A giant “Welcome to Iwahig Prison & Penal Farm” sign tells you have arrived in a place where prisoners can walk freely – no bars involved. They were free prisoners from murderers, to rapists, to thieves. It was something different to see for yourselves. Visit the colonial style manor and the souvenir store – where you can buy the best and cheapest souvenirs in Palawan. And the best of it all, it was run by…yes only prisoners. Not a guard in sight.

Baker’s Hill

For lunch, it’s Baker’s Hill, beautifully located on a hilltop of Millionaire’s row and offers a jaw-dropping view of Puerto Princesa and Honda Bay. This kid-friendly establishment not only has yummy pastries for sale but also boasts a mini-zoo, playground, a stunning garden, a number of statues of cartoon characters for your amusement.

Crocodile Farm

Going back to Puerto Princesa, we dropped by the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and conservation Center – also known as Palawan Crocodile Park. From the information I gathered, this is where they cultivate and hatch crocodiles and some other wild endangered animals. I didn’t bother going inside the park since it’s no different from Davao Crocodile Park.

Mitra’s Farm

The farm is owned by the political Mitra family, one of whom is Ramon Mitra, Jr. The area is open to the public but the main house is kept closed. One will have a scenic view of outlying islands including Dos Palmas.

Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral

This historic cathedral used to be a small church in the 1800s.

Plaza Cuartel

Dropped by Plaza Cuartel, just opposite the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. This is the site for Palawan Massacre in 1944.

Palawan Provincial Capitol and Puerto Princesa City Hall

Never to be missed in my itinerary is the visit to the Capitol or City Hall for my photo opt. I even saw Mayor Hagedorn in my visit in Puerto Princesa City Hall.

Baywalk

Lastly, the day’s tour was concluded by visiting Puerto Princesa Baywalk - developed seafront strip in the city providing a scenic place to view the sunset just located beside the seaport in downtown Puerto Princesa.

FUN IN TACLOBAN - That Bridge That Links Leyte and Samar - Part 1

Taking advantage of a a treat by my balikbayan nephew, I was able to convince him to go to Tacloban City in what we planned to be a nature and heritage trip to historical places in Leyte. And it was a pleasant surprise to find out how interesting and pleasurable this trip could be.

Day 1 - See the very famous San Juanico Bridge

Together with my nephews Nomer and Jay, we took the earliest flight to Tacloban City from Manila. We arrived at the Daniel Romualdez Airport shortly after sunrise. We wanted to maximize our time so we called everyone we knew on our way to the city proper to take us to interesting places in Tacloban City .

We checked in at the Hotel La Rica (Php 1,200 - twin bed good for three to four) along Zamora St. adjacent to the city market and the pier.

Our friendly Waray friends have managed to lend us a van to roam in and out of the city.

First in our list is the San Juanico Bridge, the longest in the country. The 2.16-km bridge is convincingly one of the most beautiful bridges in the country. Sadly, police have banned picture taking along the bridge so one has to get off at either end of the bridge if one wishes to have a souvenir shot.

Upon crossing from Leyte to Samar via San Juanico Bridge, the search for a good beachfront begins. We ended up in a beach in Kaluwayan. The sand may look like mud but the beach, being dotted with islands, offers a breathtaking view. Kaluwayan Resort has facilities for overnight stay and other outdoor activities such as boating and mountain climbing.

Out of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of Catholic churches we have in the Philippines, four baroque churches are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and I’m so grateful I was able to visit all of them.

The churches’ unique architectural style is a reinterpretation of European Baroque by Chinese and Philippine craftsmen. These structures were able to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design, and are outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates significant stages in human history.

TAAL - Batangas' Little Heritage Town

Batangas is one of the most preferred destination for Manilenos (and Cavitenos) to go for a day-long tour. Needless to say, the province is known for its fine beaches. And it is very accessible via SLEX.

But how many have actually been to Taal? Not the lake, but the town itself?

The historical town of Taal, Batangas is one of the few places that have preserved the rich heritage of the 18th century Spanish era. Many ancestral homes that are over a hundred years old still stand magnificently amidst modernization. If you can't afford to go to Vigan, Taal could be the best alternative to go on a heritage tour.

Taalenos are also widely known for their skill in making balisong and for their detailed hand embroideries done in pina and jusi, which are fabrics used in making the barong. These items can be bought here at great bargains.

To get to Taal town proper, from Pasay take the bus to Lemery. Then hop in a jeepney going to Lipa - and don't fall asleep because in a little less than five minutes you will find yourself in front of the Basilica of Saint Martin de Tours, the largest Catholic church in Asia. From there, enjoy the rest of the day walking in the streets of that little heritage town called Taal.

Why Do I Love PAGUDPUD?

Going to the beach is always the least of my travel priority. If you would ask me where I would want to go "beaching", my responses would be:

Boracay - a big NO
Puerto Galera - a much much bigger NO
Palawan - way too expensive to go - also NO
Panglao in Bohol - already getting crowded - MAYBE
Samal Island - as long as it is Davao - YES
Pagudpud -definitely YES!

Why Pagudpud?

Everything in Pagudpud is almost perfect - the sand, the water and the sun. Pagudpud is one of the best places I have ever been as a nature lover. It's peaceful and quiet there. Aside from the beach, one can opt to go to Kaibigan Falls, or Kabigan Falls to locals. But before you can actually see the Falls, you have to walk 1.5 km. Then there's also the Patapat Viaduct, Blue Lagoon (the water is true to its name - blue), and many more.

It's a week-long celebration which culminates with spectacular grand parade of people dressed in colorful and authentic costumes - all shouting "Pit Senor" and dancing in a beautifully choreographed moves. I would consider Sinulog as the festival of all the festivals in the Philippines.

One of the most memorable of my Mindanao trips was when I went to Cagayan De Oro. True to its name, Cagayanons are among the friendliest people I met and mingled with.

BUTUAN CITY - By Accident

Long before Cebu Pacific upgraded its fleet and offered low fares, I had the convenience of flying with Philippine Airlines getting 75% off on its regular fares. While others pay as much as P10,000, I pay only P1,800 for a round trip ticket anywhere in in Mindanao and P1,200 to any destination in Luzon and Visayas. That was the best part. The worst part is that I was always a chance passenger.

For this trip, originally I was holding a ticket to Cagayan De Oro but the flight was full. Never wanted to spoil my vacation, I chose to take the Butuan flight instead. Immediately, I asked approval from the PAL ticket office manager. It took awhile before my trip pass was signed, and I was being called thru the PA system to board the plane immediately. That caused the Butuan flight to be delayed for 15 minutes. ha ha ha

With my Canon camera's limited capability, I was only able to take a few good shots. Most photos were either over-exposed or out of focus.

Not so long time ago, digital cameras were considered prized commodity so I used to have a very reliable Canon still camera which I take along with my trips. I decided to scan and save soft copies of memorable photos taken from my travels some few years back.

The first of the series is my picture collection from Camiguin Island. An island on the northern tip of Mindanao. To get there, from Cagayan De Oro City, take the bus to Balingaoan Port. Then take a ferry to either Benoni or Mambajao Port, both are towns of Camiguin. A tricycle is enough for you to see the entire island for one day.

Discover BALER For A Day

I was once asked by a colleague if I have been to Baler. ‘I was only able to watch the movie. But what’s in Baler exactly?’ I asked. ‘Why not come and see for yourself.’, he insisted. Having that motivation in mind, I decided to hit the bus to Baler from Cubao via Genesis Transit at 4:00 am one Saturday morning. The trip would usually take more than 8 hours, but thanks to SCTEX – it was shortened by one hour.

Upon entering Aurora province, the Sierra Madre Mountains welcomed me with the breathtaking vast green mountain scenery – perfect for mountain climbing and nature trekking. These rainforests are the only few of the remaining rinforests in the country and mostly of ancestral domains.

I finally reached Baler at 11:00am. Not having any clear plans in mind, I decided to go somewhere which interested my eyes. I instinctively walked towards the nearby Pasalubong Center from the bus terminal – where I was able to meet the owner herself, Baby. Surprised that I went to Baler alone with no business other than sight-seeing, cultural exposure and picture-taking, Baby thought I should meet Noli Guerrero, an artist and indigenous culture advocate, who could provide me with information about Baler’s culture and history. Baby then took me to Noli who likewise got surprised about my agenda or me having no agenda at all in coming to Baler. After a very rich discussion about Baler's history and culture, he insisted I should see some attractions but with a company. He asked one of his artist-students, Elias, to go alongside and take me in and around the town.

We toured Baler the whole afternoon on a tricycle for only P150. We went to Cemento Beach with a great view of the islets of Dimadimalangat, climbed the top of Ermita Hill, walked around the town proper visiting the adjacent historic Baler Church, Dna. Aurora Quezon’s old house, the Baler Museum, the Provincial Capitol, the Manuel L. Quezon Monument and finally, Sabang Beach – where the Aurora Surfing Cup is being held every year. I checked-in at Bay’ Inn which is located along Sabang Beach - a single aircon room costs P900 . That same evening, Noli and his company invited me for a drink at the nearby Bahia De Baler KTV Bar (the only upbeat bar in town with acoustic singers) and again, enlightened me with historical, cultural and environmental significance of Baler focusing on the preservation of indigenous culture of the Ilongot and Dumagat tribes. He also told me how he abhors the fraudulent and indirect destruction of the town’s heritage by some cold-blooded town officials.

I left Baler the following morning and took the 10:00am bus to Manila.

There are still many things I need to learn and discover about Baler. That one-day experience may be significant enough but I wanted more - enough reason why I definitely should go back there.

Visited Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte for 2N/2D – that is, from Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur up to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte – using local transport. Tiresome and at the same time, amazing! This is how me and my best friend Elmer managed the trip and ourselves.

Night 1 – Arrival in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte

Our Cebu Pacific flight from Manila arrived at 7:00pm in Laoag City. From the airport we took a jeepney to the town proper. Had a very light dinner while waiting for the 8:00 pm Partas bus trip to Vigan. Actually, you can take any ordinary bus going to Vigan but Partas bus will take you there much much faster.

At 11:00 pm, we arrived Vigan town and walked to Granpa’s Inn. Checked in at P900 for twin-sharing guest room. Had dinner at Café Leona then walked along Crisologo Street and had some photoshoot before retiring.

Tip: To take great pictures of you and Vigan on the background, be at the Crisologo Street at night from 10:00 pm onwards or in the morning before 7:00 am. It is during this time that you can take photos of the Heritage Village clear of tourists.

Day 1 – Heritage Sites Tour

As early as 6:00 am, we had just coffee, had a short walk down Crisologo Street, some photoshoot, then headed to the main road to catch a bus going to Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur. It took an hour to get there. What’s in Sta. Maria anyway? It is where the La Asuncion de la Ñuestra Señora Church, a World Heritage Site and a National Landmark, is located.

At 8:00 am, an hour after some wonderful photos of the Sta. Maria Church were taken, we’re on the road again to go back to Bantay, Ilocos Sur – again, to take photos of the famous Bantay church and bell tower.

Photo shoot here and there, up and down the bell tower, it took us some 30 minutes until it was time to go back to Vigan for the free breakfast at Grandpa’s Inn.

By 10:00 am, after traversing Sta. Maria, Bantay, and Vigan – all in Ilocos Sur, we were now ready for our next destination – Ilocos Norte.

Again, via Partas Bus we’re on the road to Laoag. By 1:00 pm , we arrived and checked-in at Texicano Hotel. Had Lunch at the hotel then off we took a jeepney to Sarrat – a small but rich town famous for its antiques, beautiful museum and the homes where former president of the Philippines, Ferdinand E. Marcos, was born. We had some photos in and out of the equally famous Sta. Monica Church.

An hour later we went back to Laoag and took a jeep to Batac, which is synonymous to Sarrat – where the Marcos mausoleum is located. The museum was closed that time so we were not able to see the body of Ferdinand Marcos sealed in a glass casket.

It was hot and Elmer and I were already exhausted – so we decided to head straight to Paoay and spent some time to rest and dine and admire the Saint Agustine Church – another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Night 2 – Laoag City By Night

By 6:00 pm, we’re back to Laoag and took a little rest. Then back on the streets to find a nice restaurant and bar to get some food and drinks. Mostly, restaurants were closed at 10:00pm so we had no choice but to go back to the hotel and retire.

Day 2 – Northern Luzon Exposure

By 7:00 am we already had breakfast at Jolibee and took a jeep to Burgos – where we will hike up the hill to find Cape Bojeador – the tallest lighthouse in the Philippines. It took us about an hour to reach the site and another half-hour to trek the hill to reach the lighthouse. Up there was a spectacular 360-degree view of Ilocos Norte’s nearby towns and of the South China Sea. Going down the main road took a little less than 30 minutes, I guess.

At 11:00am we’re off to Bangui – where the Bangui Windmills are located. These are wind turbines on-shore facing the South China Sea and considered to be the biggest in Southeast Asia, and primary source of electricity in Ilocos Norte.

Shortly after some photos of awesome windmills, we’re on the road again to Pagudpud – our final Ilocos Norte destination. Starving and exhausted, the nearest canteen we found at the Pagudpud Town Plaza became our supreme refuge. Since it was already 1:00 pm – and our flight back to Manila was 7:00 pm, we decided to spend the whole afternoon in Saud Beach. Our original plan to go to Kabigan Falls, Patapat Viaduct and Blue Lagoon beach was discarded.

By 3:00 pm we were on our foot heading back to Laoag City. By 5:00pm we are at the Laoag International Airport. Exhausting as it be, it was a relief when we finally head back to Manila.

I wonder if Elmer would come and join me again in my next trip very much like this, he he he.

CAPTIVATING CATANDUANES - The Untold Story

My visit to Virac may be one of my most unforgettable. This is why.

The Virac Agenda:

Tuesday - our first day in Virac with my friend Marie. From the airport, the hotel service was waiting and we headed straight to Catanduanes Midtown Hotel where we had prior reservations. It is a mid-range hotel with spacious rooms and friendly staff. Shortly after lunch, we arranged our tour from the hotel reception for P1,500. For the whole afternoon we were able to go around and visited Luyang Cave in San Pedro, strolled along a nice river and old small church after Virac (I was not able to get their proper names), the Virac town proper itself – cathedral, capitol, and plaza. We were able to go to Twin Rock Resort which we found the location so superb that we booked a room to stay for the next day til our flight back to Manila on Thursday. We had a little tour of the place and gone swimming before going back to Virac town proper. Along the way we stopped by an old church in a place they call Antipolo – realizing that even in the remotest town Catanduanes you will find significant pieces of history, culture and religion.

We had dinner after the tour at the Sea Breeze Resturant, one of the few good restaurants in Virac a few blocks away from Midtown Inn and located at the pier.

Wednesday – we packed out things and as planned, transferred to Twin Rocks Resort. To get to Twin Rock, we have to hire a tricycle from the town and for P100. We planned to go to Puraran Beach that day and with the help of the resort’s nice receptionist we were able to use the Governor’s car and his driver to give us the tour to the north part of the island – for P1500 – not bad for a whole day’s use.

First stop – Bato Church. This very old church with unique architecture stood fronting the ocean. Perhaps that’s why it is the most popular church in Catanduanes.

Next – Puraran Beach. It took us some two hours or more to reach the place due to rugged road with some parts still under construction. We were the only visitor at the beach that day. We spent hours swimming and enjoying the waves and the white sand.

Next stop – Maribina Falls. This is the most accessible of the falls in Catanduanes and almost all locals come here to dive and swim and enjoy the clean and cool water coming from waterfalls. We joined them and likewise had fun swimming.

Going back to Virac – we headed again to Sea Breeze to have an early dinner (we only had biscuits and water for lunch – he he he) and waited until the sun went down. Then went back to Twin rocks and enjoyed the amenities and ambience. We concluded the day with a nice whole body massage courtesy of the nice receptionist. Yes! She was also our therapist that night. Multi-tasking, huh!)

Thursday – time to go back to Manila. The hotel service took us to the airport for free. We checked-in our luggages and waited for the plane to arrive. We thought the flight was just delayed after waiting for an hour until the ground flight attendant announced that the plane cannot land because of poor weather condition (it rained the night before and today was just very cloudy and zero visibility on the runway). This is how it is in Catanduanes indeed! Be prepared!

To the passengers’ bewilderment, some got irked and most, fuming (including us) the airline gound crews were not able to provide any help but to ask us to wait until Saturday for the next flight. HA HA HA

Of course that would not be possible. We have work the following day so we needed to think of another plan – much of the Amazing Race wasn’t it? With a little presence of mind – we headed fast to the Pier and fortunate to be carried by a ferry going to Tabaco, Albay. From there we went to Legazpi City to catch the soonest next available flight to Manila.

What a Catanduanes adventure! Will I be back for more? Of course!

CAPTIVATING CATANDUANES - Intro

Located on the remote eastern part of the Bicol region is Catanduanes - an island province known for being frequented by typhoons. Afraid to get marooned? Then read forth and find out 'coz this island would definitely hit you and take the wind out of your sails.

A two-day trip to Catanduanes is enough to visit most of the island’s beautiful spots. However, since the province is one of the most frequently hit by typhoons, always prepare for the unexpected – prolonged stay due to cancellation of flights, rain even during summer, or simply be enchanted of its beauty that you would want to extend your vacation to visit more of the island’s attractions.

Airfare to Virac via Cebu Pacific is an all-time cheap (as low as P888 one way). It usually takes 45 minutes to one hour to get you from Manila to Virac. Make sure to take a window seat to get a glimpse of the island’s lush greenery from above before the plane lands.

Gettting around Virac is very convenient. Tricycles will take to and around the town proper for only P7.

Accomodation is also not a problem. Virac has quite a list of hotels and inns depending on your preferences and budget. Catanduanes Midtown Inn, located right in the town proper, costs P1,200.00 for twin sharing – WIFI available. While a twin-sharing guest room at the Twin Rock Resort costs P1,500.00, along the beach and with a serene view of the ocean.

Travel Around the Philippines on a Budget

The Philippines is a wondrous place full of vivid, diverse cultures and fascinating people. Traveling around the country doesn't need to be expensive. Here's how I enjoy a local adventure while spending a reasonable amount of money.
Airline:
Always check the local airlines’ websites for promotional airfare (I was able to buy P56.00 round-trip ticket to Cebu last December 2008). Never mind if you are booking 3 to 6 months ahead of your planned trip. Not only you saved on the airfare, it maximizes your time to spend for vacation.
Accommodation:
Book for a hotel room at least a month before your planned trip. Choose a standard or economy hotel like a pension house (P400-P600/night) because it is very affordable, convenient and a great place to meet other travelers. However, because of its popularity among backpackers, the rooms fill up quickly.
Food and Drinks:
Bring your own food (easy-to-cook noodles, 3-in-1 coffee in sachets, crackers, etc.) or eat at food stalls, most popularly known as ihaw-ihaw or turo-turo (one complete meal costs as low as P50). They are basically everywhere and safe when you visit Bohol, Davao, Cebu or Cagayan de Oro. But be careful when choosing a place to eat -- the hygiene and the way they prepare the food is not always good for your stomach. Check the food before buying.
Local Transport:
Consider asking the hotel staff or visiting the local Tourism Office where you can find cheap transport and how much it should cost. This way you will avoid locals from tricking you. Instead of using arranged transport with taxis or private cars, I recommend that you take the local transport, like the jeepney or minicab (smaller version of the jeepney). If you plan on moving around in a city you should also consider using a habal-habal (motorbike), or a healthier alternative – walking!
Shopping:
Shopping at the local markets is often cheaper than the huge malls. Bargaining is the key to cheap shopping. But before you do that, I recommend that you stroll around to compare prices. It's sometimes hard to know what things should cost if it's your first time. You can't bargain for something when you even don't know if it's cheap/expensive.
Tours:
Visiting some attractions? If I were you, I would skip the package tours and rent a habal-habal (P300–P500) or minicab (P1,000-P1,500) for a day. It's cheaper and you get to see the things you want to see in your own pace. For free information on history and sights, ask the hotel staff, visit the local Tourism Office, or a fellow traveler. Otherwise, you can print the information, even the map, out from the internet. A couple of print-outs are cheaper and lightweight than a book. Practical when you're on-the-go!

DAY 5 and it was time to go back to normal life. Fortunately, the sun was shining and the aftermath left no traces of Helen's rage. Our hotel confirmed that there will be flight to Manila. Ron almost jumped for joy, and I was so amused of his childlike behavior.

As I stepped out of the hotel, I recalled every moment, faces and places I've been and I felt contented I have finally came upon and explore this divine island, though worried it would some take time before I could get back. But one thing is for sure, I WOULD DEFINITELY GO BACK TO BATANES!!!

Coming In and Out of BATANES Part 3 - Dark Nights with Ron

Never had it occured to me that I won't meet or bump into somebody in every place I visit. Like here in Batanes, I was able to meet Ron, a sales guy from Quezon City who came in the same flight as mine, checked-in the same hotel as mine, and like me, wanted to be alone and away from his girlfriend for a while (not that they are having quarrel or anything...). According to him, this is the first time he'll be taking his off on a far away land alone. At least, we both share a common denominator, though...

I would admit I felt a little worried of what's going to happen that night Helen struck the whole island. Coconut trees swung heavily in the wind's direction. Tall waves gushed violently on the shore. It was serene, except for the sound of the billowing wind and roaring splash of sea water towards the shore. But it wasn't eerie at all. It felt so blissful. Nowhere in the world you can feel this kind of strange emotion.

Day 4 was scheduled for my trip to Sabtang but the weather was not permitting. Ron and I had no choice but to sit down together in the hotel veranda and talked about our job, personal lives, and so on and so forth. That morning, though a gloomy day in Basco, we managed to keep ourselves busy by walking around the town checking out places which might contribute in make this day eventful.

A small carinderia provided us with a starter meal - lugaw with egg. Not much to offer, we left the place after eating and checked out the only Internet shop nearby which unfortunately was closed that time. Ok - so we have to move on. This time, Ron was becoming anxious that the bad weather might persist we may not be able to fly back to Manila the next morning. He was so apprehensive he was practically asking every Ivatan we met along the way about the weather conditions. But that was ok, everyone here greet everyone they meet even if they don't know ech other.

Noticeably, there are only a few original stone houses left in Basco. Most houses were altered by modern materials built other than the traditional Ivatan method. As we moved on, I felt I was in a ghost town - so peaceful and quiet only a few people were out on the streets. Here the students still go to school on storm days and farmers tend to their land to check on their crops.

Lunch at Pension Ivatan was delightful we managed to find a rare delicacy which is truly Ivatan - the coconut crab. It was my first time to see and taste it and I would truly recommend that you should try this. It would cost you but truly worth it.

Had a little siesta back at the hotel. The weather seemed to improve from last night but still we had no electricity. Again, Ron and I decided to go back to town and look for some souvenir items. There are a few stores where you can buy vakul - Ivatan's native hats, among others.

Then there is this Italian Pizza restaurant called Casa Napoli (sosyal ang Basco, ha ha!) which serves the best native Italian pizza I have tasted in a lifetime. All ingredients are fresh and delicious and native and much to my delight. The tomatoes on top tasted so good! Now that complimented the storm and the best conclusion to what seemed to be a horrible day of wind and rain and night of inevitable darkness.

After that hearty meal, we headed back to the hotel, packed our stuffs keeping our fingers crossed for the resumption of flight back to Manila the next morning. Then Ron and I slept so soundedly in our separate rooms.

Coming In and Out of BATANES Part 2 - Enduring Helen

DAY 3 - So far, I had spent such an amazing tour of nearly half of the island of Batan and I know I had so much to tell everyone already.

Electricity didn't went out last night. I later learned that electricity on the island was equally distributed among the barangays and brownout was scheduled on a regular interval because one of the three power generators was under repair (maintenance was being conducted by DPWH for over a year already, according to local Ivatans).

This morning, watching the news and the updates for typhoon Helen, it was Signal No. 2 in Basco, Cagayan and the rest of Northern Luzon. All flights to and from Basco were cancelled! I checked the weather outside from my window and, to my surprise, it was sunny! Huh! Is this what it was like in Batanes on a typhoon signal no. 2? I already loved it here!

My tour guide wasn't available to take me to the rest of southern and middle parts of Batan but he managed to get a reliever, who was there to pick me up at 9:00 am.
Our first stop, Mahatao and Diura fishing village. To get here, you must hike for about 30 minutes from the main road to get to the site. The natives in this part of Batanes have their own architectural style - different from the most popular stone houses. Here, their house were made of cogon, divided into two separate sections, the dining and living areas. Original inhabitants in this village used to have stone houses but most of them never stood that long and was destroyed by tsunami. Left along the trail were remains of the old stone houses where the original Ivatans first lived.
As we hiked further, I was able to take a dip in what they called the "Spring of Youth". According to an old folk tale, there came a man and a woman from nowhere seeking help for their very sick child. No one was able to help and cure the child until they came upon this spring, took a few sip, then miraculously their child was healed. The story was astonishing I took some water to drink and it tasted so good - well, generally the water here in Batanes is safe to drink.

We have reached the end of the trail and going back to Diura I decided to take a walk down the rocky shore where corals and other sea creatures are all visible. Quite amazing!

It was almost noon and there was a need for us to rush to the next stop - the Racuh-A-Payaman or what is famously known as Marlboro Country. It rained so hard as we neared the site but alas, it stopped as we entered the most photographed place in Batanes. Truly, I felt I was somewhere not in the Philippines. The wind felt so cool as it brushed my skin. The picturesque landscape and sea waves below - seemed like I was looking at a postcard though it was real.

I still managed to take some photos and videos of this part of Batan Island, enjoyed the fresh sight and breathe the smooth cool air. But the rain clouds were fast approaching that we needed to go back to Basco. Helen, the thyphoon, was cool enough to let me enjoy Batanes that she held her might for a while til that evening - when she landed Batanes and her rage were felt all over the island.

Coming In and Out of BATANES

As of the time of this writing, there are no available flights to take you to Basco, Batanes. Luckily, I was able to purchase a round-trip promo ticket via Asian Spirit (now ZestAir) for travel to July last year. Quite an odd season when most thypoons hit Northern Luzon - particularly Batanes. This will be just one those off-the-beaten-track journey I have to endure and enjoy.

Knowing the odds, I scheduled my arrival on a Monday and departure on Friday. Frequency of flights then was MWF. This is more than enough to visit Batan and Sabtang islands.

Prior to my departure, I arranged my accomodation and tour package online via Batanes Cultural Travel Agency. Package includes airport transfer, accomodation, tour vehicle (tricycle), boat rides to and from Sabtang, and municipal permits and fees. Total cost was P6,000 - practical enough for a budget traveller like me.

DAY 1

I arrived in Basco before noon. The weather was fine - sunny and windy. The air was cool and fresh. And the valleys are in deep greens. What a sight to behold! I had lunch in Batanes Seaside Resort where I was also booked for P400/night non-aircon (P800/night for aircon room). I started my tour of the northern part of Batan Island. Here you will see the Basco marker, Radar Tukon (Pagasa weather station), Fundacion Pacita, Idjang (stone fortress up the hill), Valugan beach, Naidi Rolling Hills with nice view of Mt. Iraya, Basco Lighthouse, Basco Cathedral and plaza. Price of the tour starts at P1,600 and can be arranged through your hotel.

My tour finished right after sundown. Back in the hotel, electricity went off and the whole place turned dark and silent except for the relaxing sound of the waves and slashing coconut leaves swaying rapidly with the wind.

DAY 2

I can see heavy rain clouds coming from the west that morning and I knew it will reach the island in a couple of hours. This time, I was scheduled on a southern tour of Batan. We started the tour by dropping by the Mahatao view deck. It rained so hard and we waited until it was done. Off on the road to Mahatao Town proper, we managed to drop by the white beach with natural stone curvings and majestic twin hills view, and the San Carlos Borromeo Church. I was so astonished by the "BLOW UR HORN" marker at the side of the road I had to take picture while sitting on top of the marker.

Next, the town of Ivana - the point nearest to Sabtang. People going to Sabtang take the boat from Ivana Port. Here is where the very famous Honesty Store is located. Also you will find the House of Dakay (now a World Heritage Site), the oldest standing Ivatan house.

Moving on to the next town, Uyugan, where hills and seascape are sights to behold. Truly a work of wonder, the Scotland of the Philippines really got what it takes to be called as such, and even more.

The last stop of our tour is the Itbud town. Here is where you will find the old dekey-a-kanayan loran station - an old weather and radar station built by the Americans during WWII. And the relaxing view of the sea and white beach in Imnajbu, the last stop for all forms of transportation here in Batanes. Beyond Imnajbu, left is a trail for farmers to walk up and down the hill to market their goods. Quiet noticieably is the serene atmosphere in this small barangay inhabited by around 300 people only. The church, schools, and even the barangay hall were open - yet no one was around!

Anyway, since my tour for this day was almost over, I decided to spend the rest of the afternoon walking along the shore and collected some shells. Then sat on a makeshift kubo made of coconut leaves for an hour before I called the day off.

That night I heard from the news that typhoon Helen, with strong winds reaching more than 100kph, was headed directly towards Basco and will reach the island the following morning. Perfect timing! Exciting, wasn't it?

BATANES - My Ultimate Destination

Winter in the Philippines? Not really. But the closest you can get is Batanes, where temperature dips to as low as 7˚C from November to January. Never mind if the province is associated with typhoons, no real nightlife, and yes - regular brownouts, you will still find a thousand and one little things to feel good and at peace in Batanes.
- People on the streets smile at each other even they do not know each other personally.
- No dust and pollution, the air you breath is fresh, really fresh.
- The valleys and seas are in their nature given color.
- You can't make a business bottling mineral water because everybody can drink directly from the faucet without fear of contracting amoebiasis or diarrhea.
- Stone houses are refreshing sight. Doors are left open while the owners are out to work.
- The airport is full of spectators during a "plane day".
- You can sleep in the park or prettily on the seashore overnight without fear that somebody may harm you.
- Coconut crabs, kuyabs and valichits (local migratory birds only found in Batanes) are abundant during certain seasons of the year.
- No traffic, no squatters, no beggars, no thieves - you feel confident that somebody who found your lost key will bring it to the local Radyo ng Bayan Station.
- The town mayor or the public school teacher also casts their fishnets and till the soil (at least, outside office hours) while the governor rides on his bike to the capitol.
- The brilliance of the moon and the stars do not compete with commercial lights.

Destination : WESTERN & CENTRAL VISAYAS

Everytime I would be given a chance to have at least 3 consecutive holidays from work, rest assured I would spend my free time "AWAY" from the crowded and polluted Metro Manila.

So be it. Planned my itenerary ahead of time - I decided to traverse Western Visayas to Central Visayas. Looking at my map, Silay City by plane would be an excellent start. It is where the new Silay-Bacolod Airport is located and would be my first time to take a look inside this airport.

DAY 1

I took the earliest flight to Silay-Bacolod via PAL. Arrived there after an hour, I was so amazed to find out I was in the middle of a vast sugar cane plantation. Yes, the airport is somewhere in the middle of 'tubohan'. But the people of Silay had everything arranged, paved the roads, and private vans are available to take you to the city proper for P50.00.

What to do in Silay City at 8:00 am? A walk along Rizal Avenue will lead you to their heritage buildings and ancestral houses, the most famous of which is the Balay Negrense. The three hour tour was a great learning experience. Silay City was the "Paris of the Philippines" before WWII. By looking at the edifices and facades of these old structures, I wondered about how this city could have looked like in those era? I believe this is where the original "Burgis" people came from.

My next stop is Bacolod City - the capital of Negros Occidental. Just a little less than an hour to reach by jeepney from Silay City. A visit to the Tourism Office helped me locate a nice hotel to stay, bathe, eat, and entertain for only ONE day and night.

Of course, my visit to Bacolod won't be complete without taking photos of the plaza and the gazebo, the City Hall, the Provincial Capitol, and other famous landmarks like SM City Bacolod(? - ha ha ha), and the Manukan Country.

DAY 2

From Bacolod was a long 8-hour trip by bus to Dumaguete City - the capital city of Negros Oriental. I missed the 8:00 am AIRCON bus but I thought I would be more comfortable to take the 9:00 am DELUXE bus instead (sounds better than AIRCON bus, isn't it?). To my surprise, DELUXE means ORDINARY - NO AIRCON! Ok, so I expect people of the ordinary kind to be seated beside me, maybe smoking along the way or sweating, or minding the rooster - yes! they bring along their pets inside the bus! Didn't wanted to miss anything, took this bus with an expectation of exhausting and strenuous 8-hour journey.

I arrived in Dumaguete City a little past five pm, drained, smelly, perspiring! Walked past Silliman University, I immediately located the nearest hotel from the Rizal Boulevard, checked-in and at last - the much needed shower! Took at least 2 hours of sleep. It was one hell of a trip!

That night in Dumaguete I was able to taste the famous 'tempura' frying along Rizal Boulevard. It was SOOO good I lost count of how much I have consumed. A piece costs P3.00. That made it even more delicious. ha ha ha. Of course my stay here won't be complete without exploring the rest of the boulevard and its nightlife activities.

DAY 3

Got up early to take the 6:00 am ferry to Siquijor - the island known for existence of withcraft technology - so to speak. Even before I went there I was able to contact and arrange a tour guide - Ceasar.

It only took me 45 minutes to reach Siquijor via fastcraft (OceanJet). Ceasar, my tour guide easily recognized me and approached me as I walk past many well-wishers in the port and immediately went with the tour riding a tricycle. That 6-hour guided tour made me realize how awesome the island of Siquijor is. Noticeably quiet and serene, there were only a few jeepneys and buses plying in the main road. The island is evidently safe with military presence in every tourist locations. The air is cool even on a bright sunny day, and the view - picturesque and spectacular. Mysterious as the island may seem, one will undoubtedly get hypnotized as its secrets unfold right before your very eyes - the white sand beaches, caves, waterfalls and virgin forests.

From the Port of Siquijor, I took the 4:00 pm ferry back to Dumaguete. Along the way I was thinking if I would go to Tagbilaran and from there take the last available flight back to Manila - quite feasible. Excitedly, I went directly to the ticketing office to buy ticket to Tagbilaran City - in Bohol. Probably everyone would think I am nuts for what I did! Who would ever think of a travel agenda like that and who else could possibly do that besides me anyway?

That night in Dumaguete, I fell asleep so soundedly!

DAY 4

I bought a 6:00 am ticket on a fastcraft to Tagbiliran - the capital city of Bohol. From Dumaguete port, I called two good Boholano friends of mine, whom I haven't seen for about a couple of years. Arriving in Tagbilaran port after an hour and a half, I saw them waiting with their habal-habal. Not wanting to waste any of our time, we immediately went to nearby coffee shop at the city central for the much awaited chat. They even took me with them around the city - which I am already familiar with. But still, Tagbiliran remains to be one of the best places to go for a vacation.

We had lunch and still managed to share some bottles of beer before my flight at 4:00 pm back to Manila. Once again, another travel accomplishment.

Why do I travel?

Everyone knows I love to travel. Almost everyone got very surprised to realize I travel alone.

I travel because I like to move from place to place, I enjoy the sense of freedom it gives me, it pleases me to be rid of ties, responsibilities and duties. I like the unknown, the odd people who amuse and inspire me. I am often tired of myself and I have a notion that by travel I can add something to my personality and so change myself a little.

BICOL (Lignon Hill, Legazpi City)

One of the best places to view Mayon Volcano and Legazpi City is the Lignon Hill (also spelled as Ligñon Hill and pronounced as /li-NYON/). This 143-meter high cinder-cone hill located 11 kilometers southeast of the volcano’s summit is the highest location in the city’s downtown area and towers over the adjacent Legazpi Airport. A long and winding road crawls up the sides of Lignon Hill where there is an observation station constructed on top. This is where the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has a permanent station to observe Mayon.

I insisted to go up the hill with Joey to experience what they say is the most exciting place to go in Legazpi. Up the hill, the weather didn't permit me to see Mayon to her fullest. But I had a nice panoramic view of the whole Legazpi City downtown, airport, and nearby Tabaco City.

BICOL (end of tour)

It was back in Legazpi that day and I had to be at the airport by noontime for my 2:00 pm flight back to Manila via Cebu Pacific. For the past 3 days I have been able to navigate almost half of the Bicolandia. I definitely had a great time inspite of the bad weather condition during my entire stay and not seeing the full view of Mayon volcano (sigh!).
Joey drove me directly to the airport and immediately had a quick lunch plus a some photo shoot at the airport. Upon checking-in I asked the airline staff to seat me next to the window at the right side of the plane. Being such, I was able to have a full view of the peak of the Mayon. At least even for the last time I was able to fulfill my tour goal.
Next time it will be on a summer season. I would plan to visit the Caramoan Peninsula in Camarines Sur, the island of Catanduanes, the butandings of Sorsogon, and the pink sands of Masbate beaches.

BICOL (Camalig, Albay)

The following morning Joey and I had to get up early for his appointment in Camalig, Albay. That practically means I had only one day to spend in Naga City - so be it.

After paying the hotel bills, we grabbed our bags and again on the road back to Legazpi City.

It was roughly 2 hours before we reached Camalig - a quiet and simple town before Legazpi City, one of the most picturesque towns in Albay. Camalig is also one of the oldest towns and this is where the pinangat (or laing in Tagalog) originated. You will also have a great view of the Mayon from this location.
Again, my visit to Camalig will never be completed without visitng St. John the Baptist Cathedral which, just like almost all other centuries-old churches in Bicol, is made entirely from volcanic rocks.

BICOL (Naga City)

Next to Pili is Naga City - the center for commerce, industry and entertainment in the entire Bicol region. There are more hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and bars here than in Legazpi City. Plus, Naga is densely populated, slow traffic noticeable on the streets, and starting to get polluted.

Upon arrival, we went directly at the Golden Leaf Hotel (650/night for double-occupancy room) to manage our stuffs and get a little rest. Joey has to attend to this meeting which will begin in less than an hour so I have to be on my own in Naga.

For the rest of the day, I was on-foot around the city. In the center of the distric is the City Plaza with the Quince Martirez monument dedicated to the fifteen martyrs of Camarines Sur. Also, I went to the most signifant Basilica of our Lady of the Penafrancia, the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Shrine of the Lady of the penafrancia (3 churches of different locations). Being a mall-rat, finding Nagaland E-mall was a bliss. Good restaurants and bars can be found along Penafrancia Avenue.

Of course, my Naga tour will never be complete without visiting the Naga City Hall.

BICOL (Pili, Camarines Sur)

The following day, Joey told me he will be on a client call to Naga City and asked if I wanted to come with him. Of course I wouldn't say no!

So there we were, on the road again. And this time it will be a 3-hour ride from Legaspi City to Naga City in Camarines Sur. It was a great road trip and I was able to see other adjacent towns after Legazpi in Albay up to Bato, the gateway town of Camarines Sur.

One famous attraction in Camarines Sur is the Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC)- famous for wakeboarding enthusiasts. It is located in the civic complex of Pili, the capital of Camarines Sur. We have managed to drop by the complex before going to Naga City.

Inside the complex are cabanas for guest accomodations which costs P1,200/night. Use of the facility is rather cheap. Wakeboard rental for the whole day costs P250.00, while the cable pass costs P600/day.

It was nice and windy at the complex - with a view of Mount Isarog in the background.

BICOL (Daraga, Albay)

After Cagsawa Ruins, take a small turn and up to the picturesque baroque church of Daraga. Here you will get a share of a great view of Mayon from top of the hill and a location suitable for a romantic wedding..he he.

Daraga church (Our Lady of the Gates Cathedral) stands on top of the hill and was constructed completely from volcanic rocks. From the church you will have good view of the Daraga town.

Joey had to do some errands that afternoon so I have to go back to the hotel. Later that night we had a nice dinner at the Chick-In Restaurant right accross the Penaranda Park.

BICOL (Cagsawa Ruins)

When you visit Albay, there is a place here very common to anyone aside from the Mayon Volcano. What else but the Cagsawa Ruins. On our way back to Legaspi City, we dropped by Cagsawa Ruins, the most famous tourist attraction in the provine. Here we found it difficult to reach the site and we have to leave the car somewhere safe. The road was still under construction and there were rocks and volcanic soil everywhere. We were guided by two kids whose names I forgot. Only the surrounding are were buried but the restaurants and other establishments were ripped off from their location by typhoon. Bad sight.
But all I felt outside was altered when I entered the ruins site. Everything was intact - fortunate enough not to be buried in mud and boulders from Mayon. It is still a place to sigh and behold.

BICOL (Tabaco City, Albay)

Even before I left for Bicol, I was in constant communication with my friend. Joey, who is based in Albay, as a Med Rep. When he learned I was coming to Bicol he said he would take me on a tour as long as he is available. Unfortunately he was on a client call the day I arrived so we met the day after. Our first stop, Tabaco City.
Tabaco is about 20 minutes drive from Legazpi. On our way, the devastation from the most recent eruption of Mayon Volcano and the strong typhoon after was evident as there were boulders along the road, houses buried in dark ashes and lahar, roads and bridges under construction - what a distressing sight.
No surprises, it never stopped raining that day. In Tabaco, we just managed to take some pictures at the Tabaco church (San Juan Bautista Cathedral, the plaza and the City Hall then visit some of Joey's doctor friends who treated us for lunch - and left for Daraga and Cagsawa Ruins.

BICOL (the rest of the day in Legazpi City)

With my umbrella and map in hand, I took the jeepney the Capitol and City Hall of Legazpi City. In all my trips, I never missed visiting these landmarks. This is by way any town or city can be recognized and distinguished.
The City Hall and the Capitol Building are adjacent to one another, including other public buildings and schools. Opposite the Capitol is the Old Albay church, the Saint Gregory the Great cathedral - the oldest in the city.
In the middle of them all is the Penaranda Park, wherein you can have a good view of the Mayon. But since it never stopped raining - no sight of her majestic perfect cone is visible.

A lot of nice restaurants can be found in this side of the city. Before heading back to the hotel, I had dinner at Bigg's.

BICOL (morning in Legazpi City)

Notwithstanding the weather, I decided to check the whole of the city by taking a jeepney and walking. Since it's never stopped raining, I decided to check out the nearest mall, the LCC Legazpi to buy a cheap umbrella (for 50 pesos). Then after a little tour inside the mall, I walked up the road til I reached Bichara's mall. I remembered when I first visited Legaspi City, this is the only place I remembered where I had a nice chat with locals young people, had some bottles of beer and really had quite a hell of a time. But this time it looked very different as it was. Quite boring now, I guess.

The rain seemed getting harder and harder but it never halted me to go on walking. I ended up entering the nice Pacific Mall. Here I spent the rest of the morning trying some native delicasy like the pinangat (in tagalog - laing). But of course never to be missed nibbling the pili nuts which can only be found here in Bicol.
